These are not official or standardised icons for the OASIS Event Terms. No standards body — OASIS, OCHA, WMO or anyone else — has endorsed these mappings. Choosing an icon for each event code is a judgement call, not a specification.
This is an internal effort to standardise the icons used across the warning tools built at github.com/wmo-raf — including cap-composer, cap-aggregator and ClimWeb — so the same event type looks the same wherever it is displayed or communicated. The event terms are standard; the icons are ours.
The OASIS
Event Terms List (OET v1.2) defines 224 standard event codes for use with the
Common Alerting Protocol — everything from flash flood to radiological
fire. The standard names the events, but ships no artwork for them.
cap-oet fills that gap: one icon for every one of the 224 codes, so any
CAP tool — an alert feed, a map, a warning composer — can show a consistent, recognisable
symbol for each event type. Icons are keyed by code (OET-079.svg), never by
term, so renaming an event never breaks a reference.
The visual language comes from the OCHA Humanitarian Icons — the family the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs uses across its own humanitarian graphics. They are designed for exactly this job: reading clearly at small sizes, in stressful contexts, across languages.
Every icon here follows OCHA's rules — a 48×48 grid, solid filled geometric shapes, rounded ends, no fine detail, flat 2D. See the OCHA branding guidelines and the UN-OCHA humanitarian-icons source set.
OCHA's set is built for humanitarian response, so it has no symbol for a number of CAP
hazards — radiation, bomb threat, smog, icicles, aircraft crash. Those codes are sourced
from Font Awesome Free (solid),
normalised into the same 48×48 viewBox and recoloured to currentColor.
Font Awesome draws in a different style, so the family isn't perfectly uniform — each
card shows its icon's origin, and Font Awesome ones carry a green-tinted border.
